Notes for Sarah Mattingly
The Mattinglys are one of the noted families who were part of the Catholic “league” of sixty families who pledged 1n 1785 to emigrate from Maryland to Kentucky. They settled at Hardin’s Creek, about ten miles east of the slightly earlier settlement at Pottinger’s Creek. Both of these communities are extensively described in Benjamin Webb’s The Centenary of Catholicity in Kentucky.
106 Webb’s chapter on the Hardin Creek settlement is about as good a description of the lives of the people there as one could wish for. I highly recommend it.
I have found no information about her beyond the marriage record. She might have been born in the 1790s,
192 or have lived 1777-1835.
193 The Mattingly family was very large.
