The case that Hezekiah Bartley is Thomas’s father is circumstantial but fairly good, in my eyes. Hezekiah appears in the 1830 census in the area where his son would be in 1840. A number of the neighbors’ names then are the same as around Thomas up through 1870. Hezekiah is two pages away from Augustus Lyons, the father of Thomas’s first wife. And Thomas has a son named Hezekiah, not a common name, in his second marriage.
There is a family report
449 that Hezekiah was born in Maryland to John and Sarah Bartley on February 22, 1793. Census reports have him born in Maryland
450 or Virginia.
451Hezekiah married Polly Jacobs on April 29, 1817 in Clark County, Indiana, across the river from the present Louisville, Kentucky.
454 He married Elenor Madden in 1824. His second marriage led to 16 children.
449I would like the picture better if I could find a Kendrick in it somewhere, but we can’t have everything.
