First Generation

1. (John) Joseph Schulte1,2, 6, son of 2. John Bernard Schulte & 3. Wilhelmina Bernardina Brüning. Born on June 8, 1896 in Carroll, Iowa.3 (John) Joseph died in Aurora, Arpahoe County, Colorado, on October 17, 1978; he was 82.4 Buried on October 18, 1978 in Fairmount Crematory, Denver, Colorado.4 Occupation: Farmer.1,4 Cause of death: Immediate, acute cerebral vascular accident (7 hours), past cerebral vascular accidents (2 years), atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (years). Other significant conditions, senile dementia.4

Joe was born in Carroll County, Iowa in 1896. At that time, his older brothers and sisters were beginning to have lives of their own and moving westward. His grandfather would die within a few years. Joe's parents and their younger children moved to Willowdale, Kansas, a German Catholic community, when Joe was eight. When he began schooling at that age, his family had spoken only German at home, so when he began lessons he faced the additional challenge of a foreign language.

Like other young men around him, Joe went to work on the farm early, after completing the sixth grade of elementary school5. Around 1919 Joe and his father bought land in St. Leo, a nearby German Catholic community.

The history of St. Leo is of interest and available online.6

Joe and his father planned and built the family house there, reportedly drawing on Johann Bernard's work in Iowa. About this time Joe's father's health began to fail and he became bedridden with severe arthritis, and no doubt other ailments. Joe's younger sister Pauline helped Joe to care for their father. Their mother Wilhelmina died in 1921, their father in 1923.

Joe and Pauline spent some time traveling together after their father's death. On this trip, Joe met Connie Bartley, whom he married in January 1926. (Pauline had married not long before.) Joe’s and Connie's first child, Beverly, was born in September.

Joe was not a man to use two words when one – or none – would do. My parents report that one time when he was hanging a picture, he misstruck with the hammer, slicing quite a gash in his hand. Remarking only, "Damn," he left the room, after a while reappearing with a great rag bandage around his hand. Without further comment, he resumed hanging the picture.

On January 12, 1926 when (John) Joseph was 29, he married (Catherine) Connie Bartley3, 7, daughter of John Edward Bartley (November 25, 1867-March 19, 1942) & Mary Frona Clayton (June 3, 1869-January 28, 1934), in Nashville, Kansas. Born on November 19, 1902 in West Louisville, Kentucky.3,7 (Catherine) Connie died in Aurora, Arpahoe County, Colorado, on August 30, 1983; she was 80.8 Buried on September 2, 1983 in Fairmount Crematory, Denver, Colorado.8 Occupation: Teacher, housewife.1 Cause of death: As certified: Immediate, bilateral bronc[h]opneumonia. Other significant conditions, s/p Left hip fracture.8

They had the following children:
i. (Joan) Beverly, 3 (1926-2014)
ii. (Marolyn) Janice (1928-2019)
iii. John Bernard (“Jerry”) (1932-2003)

Second Generation

2. John Bernard Schulte7,9, 12, son of 4. Gerhard Heinrich Schulte & 5. Maria Angela (“Anna”) Albers. Born on July 15, 1845 in Tinnen, Niedersachsen, Germany.2,10,9,11 The death certificate shows his place of birth as “Grohs Stover.”. At the age of <1, John Bernard was baptized in Lathen, Niedersachsen, Germany, on July 17, 1845.9 Godparents: Gerhard Wilhelm Lübbers, Ackerssohn in Tinnen, Susanna Albers, Ackersfrau zu Niederlangen. Emigrated in 1869 from Hannover to Iowa.12 John Bernard died in St. Leo, Kingman County, Kansas, on June 27, 1923; he was 77.2,11 Buried on June 29, 1923 in St. Leo, Kingman County, Kansas.2,11 Occupation: Farmer; reported by Agnes Stegman to be teacher in Germany, house builder in America.10,13 Cause of death: Valvular heart disease, contributory factos rheumatism and reflux.11 Religion: Roman Catholic.

The Schulte family moved to St. Leo, Kansas in 1905, though they lived in various surrounding towns during the next decade or so.14

On February 12, 1878 when John Bernard was 32, he married Wilhelmina Bernardina Brüning7,15, 13 in Mt. Carmel, Iowa.2,16 The date of February 12 follows Betty Smith’s records. The County listings show a date of January 29.

They had the following children:
i. Gerhard Henry7 (1878-1880)
ii. John Bernard7 (1880-1882)
iii. Mary Elizabeth7,2 (1882-1960)

Wilhelmina came with her mother and stepfather to Kniest Township, Iowa, in 1877, marrying Johann Bernard Schulte the next year, when she was 22.

Third Generation

4. Gerhard Heinrich Schulte13,19,11, 24, son of 8. Herman Heinrich Schulte & 9. Anna Helena Lübbers. Born on December 30, 1813 in Germany.13,9,20 At the age of <1, Gerhard Heinrich was baptized in Lathen, Niedersachsen, Germany, on December 30, 1813.9 Godparents Johannes Hinricus Kässen & Gesina Lübbers. Gerhard Heinrich died in Carroll, Iowa, on May 2, 1893; he was 79.14 Occupation: Farmer.9,11 Religion: Roman Catholic.9

In Germany, his occupation is variously reported. He is sometimes described as an “Eigener” or “freeman,” in the sense the term had been used in England and New England for centuries, i.e. an independent citizen and member of the community with full rights.9 He is also called a “Kötter,”21 something like a tenant farmer, who lived in a “cottage” away from the main house. Probably all of these were true at various times. The last vestiges of the feudal system were disappearing at about this time in Germany, and the peasants liberated. The 1852 Gross Stavern census reports him as a “Beerbter,”22 or heir. By census records, he was a farmer in Iowa. He was reported also by Agnes Stegman to be a tax collector in Hannover, and a housebuilder in America.13 (These last roles are uncorroborated and open to question. Her report of the role of tax collector does jibe with the status of Schulte as “steward,” including the responsibility for collection of taxes.)

The first three children of the family, including Johann Bernard, are shown in St. Vitus Church records as born in Tinnen. the next four are shown as born in Gross Stovern, suggesting that the Schultes moved sometime between 1845 and 1847.21 Though the Schultes came to America from Stavern, I doubt that they had more than a few years’ residence there. Stavern was a couple of miles across the great moor from Tinnen, where nearly all of the known ancestors lived, and most current namesakes still reside.

On December 5, 1840 when Gerhard Heinrich was 26, he married Maria Angela (“Anna”) Albers23,24,11, 25 in St. Vitus, Lathen, Niedersachsen, Germany.

They had the following children:
i. Herman Heinrich13,9 (1841-1841)
ii. Anna Elizabeth13 (1843-1912)
2 iii. John Bernard, 12 (1845-1923)
iv. Anna Helena13,9 (1847-)
v. Hermann Heinrich9,13 (1850-1908)
vi. Johan Herman9 (1852-1852)
vii. Anna Maria13,9 (1853-1926)

5. Maria Angela (“Anna”) Albers23,24,11, 25, daughter of 10. Englebert Rüterjans (Rüter) & 11. Angela (Engel) Elisabeht Albers. Born on March 15, 1815 in Oberlangen, Niedersachsen, Germany.25,9 Maria Angela (“Anna”) died in Gross Stavern, Hannover, on May 27, 1855; she was 40.9 Died at about 4:00 p.m. Buried on May 30, 1855 in Sögel, Niedersachsen, Germany.9 At the age of <1, Maria Angela (“Anna”) was baptized in Sögel, Niedersachsen, Germany, on April 2, 1815.9 Godparents Angela Adehlheid Albers & Rudolph Reüter. Occupation: Keeping house.25 Religion: Roman Catholic.9

6. Johann Tobias Henrich Brüning18,13,15,26,27, 26, son of 12. Johann Henrich Brüning & 13. Maria Elisabeth Krimpenfort. Born on March 2, 1826 in Lohne, Oldenburg, Germany.18,13,28 Godparents: Tobias Ottmann, of Grosse Kalvalage; Anna Catharina Krimpenfort, Brockdorf. Johann Tobias Henrich died on December 24, 1855; he was 29. Occupation: Heuermann = hired farm hand.26 Religion: Roman Catholic.26

The marriage register notes that Johann was from Lohne, where he was duly baptized, and that he and his wife wished to live as Heuerleute in Steinfeld. His wife was 8 months pregnant at the time of the wedding, not a particularly unusual situation.

On May 10, 1853 when Johann Tobias Henrich was 27, he married Maria Elisabeth (Mary, Lizzie) Schlärman18,29,15,30,31,32, 27 in St. Johannes Church, Steinfeld.33,30,26 Witnesses were Herm Henrich Brüning, brother of the bridegroom, and Arnd Henrich Deters, cousin of the bride.

They had the following children:
i. Henrick Anton13,15 (1853-1907)
3 ii. Wilhelmina Bernardina, 13 (1855-1921)

7. Maria Elisabeth (Mary, Lizzie) Schlärman18,29,15,30,31,32, 27, daughter of 14. Carl Anton Schlärman & 15. Maria Agnes Dreyer. Born on December 5, 1832 in Steinfeld, Oldenburg.18,29 Maria Elisabeth (Mary, Lizzie) died in Kniest Township, Carroll County, Iowa, on January 24, 1901; she was 68.30,34 Buried in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Mt. Carmel.35 Religion: Roman Catholic.26 Cause of death: Heart disease.36

Maria Elisabeth’s younger brother, Carl Joseph, emigrated from Steinfeld to America, arriving in Baltimore on the Bark Union on September 18, 1866. He was the first of the family known to have come to America. His future bride, Anna Vaarman, accompanied him. They settled in Illinois, where they lived for at least fifteen years. In America, he spelled his name Schlerman.

Elisabeth married Johan Henrich Tobias Brüning in 1853 when she was nineteen. They had two children. In December 1855, six weeks after the birth of Wilhelminia, he died. In 1861 Elisabeth married Fred Wübker, with whom she had at least two children who survived past infancy. The Wuebkers emigrated to America in 1877,37 settling in Kniest Township, Carroll County, Iowa. Elisabeth’s brother Carl Joseph and his family moved from Illinois to Iowa. Elisabeth’s brother Carl Joseph and his family moved from Illinois to Iowa, where the siblings were next door neighbors, as the pattern often was. Besides the Brüning and Wuebker natural children, Fred and Elisabeth adopted Paul, born in 1885, when Elisabeth was 53. The 1900 Federal census reports that she had eight children, four of whom survived until that time.32

The name is spelled in many different ways, usually “Schloerman” in later family records.15,29,30

Noted: “P: Ger[har]dt Ruter, Antrine Schors, O[ber]langen. Occupation: “Eigener” or freeman, “Fassbinder” = cooper, barrelmaker.9,38 Religion: Roman Catholic.38

It is worth noting that the children are bearing the name of the mother, rather than the father. Reinhard Cloppenburg of the Osnabrüch Diocese Familienforschungstelle, who did the research for me in Meppen, explains, “If a landowner had only a single daughter as heiress, and she then wed, then the marrying young man would take the name of the house/manor. Thus Englebert Rüter (Rüyrt = Reuter = Reiter = horsed solder = equus) married into the Albers family and then was called Albers. This Rüter family later became Rüterjans = Johann, son of Rüter.

Rüter is a low German name. Dutch and low/high German are closely related languages.”39

There were at least three different Johan Brünings born in Lohne around the beginning of the 18th century. The birth register for Johan Henrich, born 1724, is clear that his father was Joan Brüning and that his mother’s name was Gesina Bernhaus, or something close to that (the handwriting is very difficult). Taking age 20 as an estimate for Joan’s minimum age at Johan Henrich’s birth, we would have a birth date of 1704 as earlier. In fact, in 1784 there is a death listing for a Johan Brüning, aged 80. We would also expect to see a marriage record for Joan’s parents a while before 1704. Indeed, we find a marriage record for Johan Brüning and Petronella Bording in 1701.

What we don’t find, unfortunately, is a birth record for Joan, which should be there sometime around 1704 or earlier. So the ancestry further back remains uncertain.
