The English Baronetage reports, “[Meredith] was the first of the family that took on him the surname of Philipps, stiling himself, Meredith Philipps, instead of Meredith ap Philip.”
2526There are reports that thake the line back to around the year 1000. For instance, the
Baronetage says, “THIS family (b), which is of great antiquity in South-Wales, is lineally descended from, 1. Cadifor ap Colhpyn, of Blaenkych, lord of Dyfed, or Pem brokeshire, who, on account of his large estate, was called Cadifor- Vawr, or, the Great. He was of the fame tribe with Vortigern, king of Britain, and paternally descended from Maximus, king of Britain, and emperor of Rome. He married Hellen, daughter and sole heir to Llwch LlawenVawr, a lord of South-Wales, by whom he had three sons, among whom he divided his lordships and possessions : to Bledri, surnamed Latimer, his eldest, he gave Kylfant, Guidigada, Trayan Elgocd, Kastlecoch, inP-enihyn, Llandilo Kantref yw, Manner Gayng, Coed Ralph, and Stackpoole, in Pembrokeshire, with much other lands, and died, anno Dom. 1084, and was buried in the priory of Carmarthen.”
