“In 1636 a young Englishman named Daniel Clocker arrived in Maryland, just two years after its first settlement. He began life there as a servant bound to Thomas Cornwaleys, one of the colony's Catholic leaders. Once Clocker's time of service was up, he worked for himself. He married, acquired land, raised a family, and died forty years after his arrival - a respected official in the government of St. Mary's City, the provincial capital.”2218
