Notes for Maurice de Berkeley Knt.
4th Lord Berkeley.
402“He was a commander in Gascony in 1355, and distinguished himself at the Battle of Poitiers 19 Sept. 1356, where he was severely wounded and taken prisoner. He was subsequently ransomed for £1080. He was summoned to Parliament from 14 Aug. 1362 to 24 Feb. 1367/8. In 1365 he and his wife received papal indults for six years for a portable altar and to celebrate mass before daybreak.”
402 At that time, £1080 was a mind-boggling sum.
