Like his brothers, Joshua was an early settler of Kentucky.292 He rose to be a militia colonel. He settled in Mason County.

He married Susan Lewis. Their son Joshua G. Baker, later Governor of Louisiana, was born in Mason in 1799.

By 1803, the family had moved away to West Florida, not then a part of the United States.572 They settled in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana.573
